QUESTION:
I am building a garage with mother in law apartment above it. It will be 24 X 28 and the max height grade to peak is 20'. What is the most economical way to heat this space? I will be starting from scratch on this one so I can do anything. I was thinking of a radiant heat in the floor but how comfortable will it be upstairs in the apartment.

ANSWER:
You have a lot of questions that need to be answered but definitely you can't heat the slab in your unit/apartment and expect it to be comfortable upstairs (unless you want roasted BMW) so you will have to put a second zone on the second floor but you are only talking 700 sq f. In these situations I always suggest a PTAC (PTAC hotel style) unit this will give you heating and cooling at a reasonable cost you won't lose any available space to ductwork.
