What is a split air conditioning system?
Most air conditioning systems are made up of components inside and outside your home, this is what is known as a split air conditioning system.

What is refrigerant?
Refrigerant is the media or material used to transfer heat from a location where it is undesirable, usually the inside of your home, to an area where it is desirable, usually the outside of your home.


What is superheat?

Superheat is the heat added to a material after it has reached it’s boiling point at a given pressure.
Example, water boils at 212 degrees farenhight at normal atmospheric pressure, if you continue to heat the steam to 240 degrees you would have 28 degrees of superheat.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning

What is central heat and air conditioning?
Central heat and air conditioning is a comfort control system that controls the temperature in many areas of your home from one central location.

How does a compressor work?
Compressors do just what there name says they compress the refrigerant to change it’s state from a low temperature gas to a high temperature gas so it can expel heat into an area where it is desirable.

What is troubleshooting?
Troubleshooting is using your five senses to define symptoms that lead you to problems your subject equipment is experiencing. Once you know the problems you can readily come up with solutions.

What is a condensor?
Condensors, strictly speaking, are the coils in the outside portion of your equipment that expel heat outside. The outside portion of a split system is also known as a condenser or condensing unit.

What is a load calculation?
Load calculations are mathematically derived numbers that tell you how much cooling (tons) and heat (btu’s) is needed to satisfy the requirements of a given space.

What is an evaporator?
Evaporators are the cold side of your air conditioner, they house the refrigerant when it is cool and in a liquid state and they allow unwanted heat to be absorbed into the refrigerant until it reaches it’s boiling point and evaporates.
